Solar-powered Toilets Sell Energy

The toilets have two sets of solar panels: one powers the water system, while photovoltaic panels convert sunlight into electricity.

When the toilet block is able to produce more power than it needs, it is able to sell the excess power to the National grid.

They have recently been refurbished at a cost of £35,000.

These solar panels are quite normal on public buildings and private buildings but not in on public toilets.

After the toilets were closed in 2006, town regeneration group Llani Ltd applied for funding for the project from the Welsh Assembly Government and renewable energy groups.

Some people were disappointed when the toilets closed. They were concerned about the effect on tourism and the impact on businesses.

When they decided to refurbish the toilets they wanted to install solar panels to keep their energy costs down. About one kilowatt of energy was being produced.

When the panels produce more power than is needed, electricity goes into the National Grid and that is offset against our energy bill.

I think it’s a good idea to use solar panels on public toilets because the solar panels produce free energy and they also heat the water. This can keep the energy costs low.

When the solar panels create more power than needed, they sell it to the National grid. This means that there is more green energy in circulation. This is very positive for the earth because the sun is used to create the energy, so there is no pollution.

So I think that more countries should follow this example because it’s a very good initiative to create green energy and keep the costs low of public toilets.

  1. It's a good initiative to put some solar panels on the roof of these public toilets. The advantages of doing it are already mentionned in the text.
Warming water and produce energy to let the toilets work by using solar energy, are a good thing for the environment.
All what's produced can be used, so there's no waste of energy anymore!
The fact of putting this energy in the National Grid is a wonderful idea to save energy and to cut energy waste too.

  2. i think this is good initiative. Although the cost is high to place this toilets, but according to me it's worth it. This is a great example for other countries, but i think this is too expensive for some countries, especially now in these financial hard times...
My conclusion of this is that it's a very good concept, but I think the price is too high
